Opening and first session of VITA @ India Community Center.
IRS-trained and certified volunteers of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will prepare and electronically file Federal and State individual income tax returns at no charge to the taxpayer.
If you need the services....
The service is for the benefit of low-income, elderly, limited English proficient and disabled taxpayers. Low income returns are defined as those with AGI (Aggregate Gross Income) less than $42,000 for 2008. The training provided through the VITA program focuses on credits, deductions and issues relating to the categories of taxpayers mentioned above.
The volunteers are all busy and unavailable to help outside these hours, but if you feel that you need more information about the scope of the return that is not answered at the front desk, you may send questions to taxhelp@indiacc.org. That way you can avoid coming in only to be told that you cannot be helped.
If you want to volunteer ....
If you are a tax professional interested in providing this free service, your generosity is appreciated, and it is possible that you may have more knowledge and experience than some of our volunteers. However, it is a requirement of VITA that you pass the open-book no time limit exam either on the test sheet or online at a certain level of performance. This is a requirement that must be satisfied every year before volunteers are accepted for the service. The volunteers who are providing this service were all certified earlier this year and were volunteers at the Milpitas Public Library.
Information on volunteering and indicating your interest for the main season from February thru mid-April 2010 is available at http://www.vita-volunteers.org. Note that one of the conditions that volunteers need to agree to is that they will not solicit any business or derive any material benefit from the taxpayers the help.
