Thousands Embrace Spirit of “Seva” at Landmark Walkathon

Sunnyvale, CA – On Sunday, July 18th, Sunnyvale’s Baylands Park hosted a groundswell of altruism and community support as a gathering of thousands lost themselves in the service of others. Sevathon, a community walkathon promoting the Ghandian maxim of selfless service, kicked off its second year with an astonishing 2500 people in attendance including 1500 walkers and more than 300 volunteers. Founded as a platform for community awareness, Sevathon brought 41 nonprofits together in an unprecedented alliance for the common good as causes ranging from education to cultural awareness and community development to health services took turns in the spotlight sharing their stories with an audience of compassionate activists.

Many were moved by the event’s message and enthusiastic turnout: “We made history by bringing together the largest gathering of its kind here in North America, all devoted to the Gandhian message of Seva,” said Raju Reddy, Sevathon co-chair. “There were several moments that were inspiring to me personally over the last few months, but perhaps none as much as the few minutes that we all marched to the start line as we followed the torch. Those few minutes were a beautiful culmination of the ideas, energy and passion that each one in our community has brought to Sevathon.” After 5 months of hard work and countless challenges and tests of their resolve, scores of selfless volunteers had an overwhelmingly emotional experience as thousands marched behind the torch they had worked so hard to ignite.

Scores have already pledged their services and support to next year’s event which is sure to swell even larger as more and more members of the community turn out to take up the torch and spread its illuminating message of service and cooperation to all.
